What is Online Backup?
A lot of new companies have started offering online backup services recently. It sounds like a good idea, and in most cases, it is.
- But how do you know if online backup is right for ALL of your data?
- And how do you know which online backup service to use?
- What about FREE options? (Did we get your attention there?)
Regarding the first question, the honest answer is, online backup is great. But it should be used as a part of a broader backup strategy, which depending on your data may include:
- USB flash drives
- CD/DVD/BluRay disks
- Removable hard drives/cartridges
And you'll often need a fireproof safe or vault like THIS ONE.
When selecting backup methods, there are pros and cons to consider.
The three obvious considerations are:
- Backup Capacity
- Backup Rate
- Backup Price
With online backup, those factors are "moderate", "slow" and "low priced" respectively.
That means it is best suited for backing up small to moderate amounts of data, such as mission critical company files, tax records, contact lists, etc. It can also be used to backup moderate amounts (typically 1GB or less) of static files that don't change, but rather slowly accumulate (such as photos or separate invoice files).
What it is NOT well suited for is backing up a large amount of data that changes frequently. The primary reason is the "Backup Rate" is often not fast enough, even over "fast" connections, to backup more than a few hundred megabytes overnight.
For example: Backing up 1GB of data using a DSL connection with a 64Kbps (upload) rate would take close to 16 hours. Compare that to a 1GB USB flash drive that might backup 1GB in just a few seconds and you start to understand why one backup method is not right for all situations.
